The Athenaeum Chorale
Beginning its thirty-sixth season, the Athenaeum Chorale was founded in the fall of 1980, and has continued to inspire and delight listeners and worshippers in performances of great choral masterworks and the sacred liturgical repertoire.
The entire season is held in the Athenaeum’s beautiful Italian Romanesque Chapel of St. Gregory the Great. Sung Vesper liturgies comprise the main offering of this year’s schedule. Each service includes choral repertoire from a variety of periods and traditions. Prelude music begins each service and is often presented by guest artists.
The annual Advent Service of Lessons and Carols is held in December. This popular and well attended service centers around the celebration of the patronal feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception in the midst of the Advent season. Chants with handbells, traditional and new Advent carols for choir and congregation, beautiful Marian motets and scripture lessons read by members of the Athenaeum faculty draw record numbers of people to this beloved service each year.
Three Vespers with concerts are planned this season. On All Saints Day in November Gabriel Faure’s Requiem, for choir & organ will be sung, a carol concert at the Baptism of the Lord Vespers in January and in February the Stabat Mater by Emanuele d’Astorga for choir, soloists and strings will be performed.
