The Athenaeum Chorale
The Athenaeum Chorale, founded in 1980, continues to inspire and delight listeners and worshippers in performances of great choral masterworks and the sacred liturgical repertoire. The chorale is under the direction of Athenaeum Music Director Anthony DiCello.
The chorale's annual performance season is held in the Italian Romanesque Chapel of St. Gregory the Great on the Athenaeum campus.
Sung vesper liturgies comprise the main offering of the yearly schedule which generally runs from early October through Eastertide. Each service includes choral repertoire from a variety of periods and traditions. Prelude music begins each service and is often presented by guest artists.
The annual Advent Lessons and Carols service often draws standing room only audiences on December 8 - the patronal feast of Mary's Immaculate Conception. Chants with hand bells, traditional and new Advent carols for choir and congregation, beautiful Marian motets and scripture lessons read by members of the Athenaeum faculty, draw people to the beloved service each year.
In early April, the Athenaeum Chorale presents the annual Spring Concert featuring music for choir and soloists with orchestra. Tickets are required for this event.
All other performances are free and open to the public.
The Athenaeum Chorale is made possible through the generosity of supporting contributors. All contributors receive an invitation to a private reception in April and are recognized in each event program.
The financial assistance of donors is essential. Gifts are needed to ensure each season's concerts and services.
