Athenaeum Lectures

The Athenaeum offers several different series of lectures. The oldest is the LeBlond Lecture series. Leblond Lectures have been given for more than 50 years. At present they occur annually or biennially and can address any theological topic.

The other lecture series offered by the Athenaeum have been established more recently. The Gardner Lecture in Moral Theology was established by a gift given to the Our Faith, Our Future capital campaign (1994-96) by Mr. and Mrs. James J. Gardner. The Gardner Lecture is given biennially on some topic in moral theology.

The Marzheuser Lecture on Jewish-Catholic Relations was established in memory of the Rev. Richard A. Marzheuser alumnus, faculty member and dean of Mount St. Mary's Seminary, who died in 2000. In the last years of his life, one of his main concerns was fostering improved relations between Catholics and Jews. The Marzheuser Lecture is given biennially on a topic related to Jewish-Catholic relations.

The George C. Findley Memorial Lecture was established in 2004. For almost 15 years George Findley was director of the Office of African-American Catholic Ministries of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. In that capacity he worked closely with the Athenaeum on a number of projects over the years. For that reason the Athenaeum established this lecture series in his memory. The purpose of this lecture series is to explore the relationship of African-Americans and other culturally distinctive groups to the Catholic Church. The Findley lecture is given annually or biennially.
