Pastoral Administration Program |
Initiated in 2006, the Pastoral Administration program was developed at the request of the Archbishop in response to archdiocesan needs. It is a graduate track designed to build upon a student's prior formation in theology and pastoral ministry. The program allows lay and ordained participants to develop and enhance skills in pastoral leadership and administrative ministry. It includes academics and formation and allows for flexibility in course selection to meet student needs.
Requirements
18 graduate credit hours in the following areas are selected in consultation with the student's advisor:
- Worship/Liturgy – 3 credits
- Catechesis/Formation – 3 credits
- Human Resources – 3 credits
- Financial/Material Resources – 3 credits
- Elective – 3 credits
- Leadership Seminar – 3 credits
Pastoral Care Experience
Supervised experience of at least 100 hours in pastoral care ministry is required for completion of the program. Students may submit evidence of prior or current experience (such as a supervised Field Education or parish experience at the direction of their pastor) or they may complete this component concurrently with courses.
Project in Ministry
Participants must have planned, completed and documented at least one new initiative in ministry that includes a needs assessment and pastoral plan and have completed at least 60 hours in a formal mentoring or spiritual direction relationship. Students may submit evidence of equivalency or fulfill these requirements concurrently with courses.
Spiritual Formation
Participants are required to attend a yearly day of reflection or retreat, participate in scheduled theological reflection and have regular meetings with an approved spiritual director. These components help participants integrate scripture, tradition and theology while responding effectively to ministerial challenges.
Application Process
This program is designed for people who have completed both an undergraduate degree and a ministry formation program, including academic coursework, supervised experiences of field work, mentoring and a leadership project. Applicants should have significant pastoral experience, the ability to study theology at the graduate level and the desire to grow as pastoral leaders. Applicants should have the recommendation of their canonical and/or employment pastor, if employed by a parish.
Most participants are Catholic, but members of other faith traditions who are preparing for service in their own communities are welcome, understanding that the theology and approaches will reflect the stance and teachings of the Catholic Church.
