Additional information about admission to some Athenaeum programs follows:
1. Mount St. Mary's Seminary (Master of Divinity degree program)
Only Catholic men who are sponsored by a Catholic diocese or a Catholic religious community as potential candidates for ordination to the presbyterate are admitted to the seminary and its Master of Divinity degree program. Therefore, a prospective seminarian must first contact the vocation director of his diocese or religious community. If the vocation director recommends his admission to Mount St. Mary's Seminary, he then does the following things:
1. The student must submit an application with the required documentation (e.g. physical examination, transcripts, sacramental records).
2. If he has attended a college seminary, a favorable recommendation to a theologate is needed.
3. If he is transferring from another theologate seminary, he needs to supply not only transcripts, but also previous evaluations and recommendations from that seminary. If he is changing dioceses, the seminary needs access to the prior vocation director and bishop.
4. Psychological testing and feedback must be completed.
5. The candidate must set up a personal interview with the Admissions Committee of the seminary.
2. Lay Pastoral Ministry Program (Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry degree program)
To be considered for admission to the Lay Pastoral Ministry Program, applicants must be interviewed by a staff member and submit a written application, including an autobiography and a set of references from whom recommendations are then requested. Applications must be submitted by April 30 of the year in which a participant plans to enroll.
In addition to the interview and submission of the application form, the process for formal application includes attendance at an assessment workshop with other applicants and a personality profile with a licensed counselor. The personality profile includes the MRA, FIRO-B and MBTI. The counselor meets individually with each applicant to discuss the results of these inventories and their implications for ministry. Considerations for admission include
- orientation toward service
- emotional maturity
- evidence of prayer life
- experience in ministry
- openness to change
- ability to study theology at an appropriate level
- stability in home and personal life
The LPMP staff reviews applications after the assessment workshop and makes its recommendations for admission to the Athenaeum Admissions and Degrees Committee. Participants are notified by July 15 of the decision.
Although the program is designed for lay persons in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, qualified persons from other dioceses and other denominations are welcome to apply.
3. Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling degree program
In order to apply for admission to the degree program three things are necessary:
1. Submission of an application form, which is available from the Office of the Registrar (513-231-2223), and required documentation to the Dean of the Athenaeum
2. Psychological evaluation
3. An interview by the director of the program.
4. Diaconate Formation Program
To be considered for admission a man must be a Catholic in good standing in the Church and fully initiated in the faith. He must be at least 32 years of age.
Application must be made to the director of the Permanent Deacon Office, Archdiocese of Cincinnati, 100 E. Eighth Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202, (513) 421-3131. Applications for the program are accepted from September through February preceding the beginning of a class in September.
The next formation class begins September 2010.
Applicants must submit various forms, certificates, transcripts, etc. Each man also takes a battery of psychological inventories and participates in an interview with a counseling professional. A home visit and extended interview with the applicant (and wife) is conducted by the deacon office staff. All this information is then evaluated by a team (both clergy and lay) and letters indicating whether a person has been accepted or not are then mailed.
5.
Registration for courses by students not enrolled in degree programs
Qualified students may enroll in most Athenaeum courses, on a credit or audit basis, without having been admitted to a degree program. In this way they can design their own course of studies.
Such students must give evidence that they possess competence to pursue the level of course work for which they register. In the case of graduate courses, this ordinarily means that they must have earned a bachelor's degree. They must also have fulfilled the prerequisites for any given course. Persons interested in enrolling in any Athenaeum course should contact the Office of the Registrar.
