Welcome to the Athenaeum of Ohio

Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr

Archdiocese of Cincinnati

Welcome to the Athenaeum of Ohio, home of the third oldest Catholic seminary in the United States. As chancellor of the Athenaeum and chairman of its board of trustees, I am very proud of this institution. It not only has a proud history, dating back to 1829 and Cincinnati's first bishop, but is positioned for a strong future as well.

The late Bishop Carl Moeddel called the Athenaeum "the hidden gem of the Archdiocese." Today, that gem has a greater glow - and it is no longer so hidden. A recent capital campaign, "Investing in Our Future …Preserving Our Legacy," exceeded its goal by 21 percent in part because the number of donors more than doubled from the previous capital campaign. This is a strong indication that Catholics of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati know, appreciate, and are willing to support the Athenaeum of the 21st century.

In the Athenaeum, the Archdiocese of Cincinnati has a blessing that only a few other dioceses enjoy today - a local institution dedicated to the effective formation of priests, deacons and lay ministers. It does so through three divisions:

Mount St. Mary's Seminary of the West, the Athenaeum's oldest division, prepares men for ordination as Roman Catholic priests. The seminary program has two primary components: spiritual formation and ministerial education. Priests ordained following formation at Mount St. Marys Seminary serve not only the Archdiocese of Cincinnati but other dioceses throughout the United States and throughout the world.

Lay Pastoral Ministry Program (LPMP) prepares women and men to serve the Church and our communities as lay ministers. Since its founding in 1975 as one of the first such programs in United States, more than 600 graduates have contributed to the mission of the Church by actively serving in parishes, schools, social service agencies and in other lay ministries.

The Special Studies Program, offers more specialized opportunities of study, including the Deacon Formation Program as well as continuing education programs for those in ministry.

I invite you to explore this website and discover the Athenaeum of Ohio. Pray with us, learn with us, grow in wisdom and grace with us.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Dennis M. Schnurr
