BFS Dinner Features Influential Bishop 3/9/2016

Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl, whom the Washington Post referred to as “one of the world’s most influential bishops,” will be the keynote speaker at the annual Bishop Fenwick Society Archbishop’s Thank You Dinner on May 6.

“We are truly blessed to have Cardinal Wuerl as our guest speaker this year,” said Father Benedict O’Cinnsealaigh, president and rector. “Archbishop Dennis Schnurr and the cardinal are personal friends, spending much time together through the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. We’re grateful Archbishop Schnurr was able to secure such a sought-after speaker.”

As Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Wuerl hosted Pope Francis (2015) and Pope Benedict XVI (2008) during their first pastoral visits to the United States. He also participated in the March 2013 conclave that elected Pope Francis and currently serves on dozens of national and international governing bodies, including the Vatican Congregations for the Doctrine of the Faith and for Bishops. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cardinal Wuerl also served as Bishop of Pittsburgh for 18 years, beginning in 1987.  Prior to that, he served as Auxiliary Bishop in Seattle.

“We’re also proud of Cardinal Wuerl’s connection to our seminary,” Fr. O’Cinnsealaigh noted. The cardinal studied at St. Gregory Seminary of the Athenaeum from 1958-60 (his freshman and sophomore years in college). At that time, St. Gregory’s (minor seminary) offered a four-year high school education, and two years of college. Mount St. Mary’s Seminary (major seminary) where seminarians completed their education and formation, was located in Norwood. When St. Gregory’s closed in 1980, Mount St. Mary’s relocated to the former site of St. Gregory’s.

Throughout the years, the seminary has depended on financial support from generous benefactors. The Bishop Fenwick Society (BFS) is a devoted giving society made up of benefactors who give $1,000 or more, annually, to fund the seminary and Athenaeum. To thank BFS members for their steadfast generosity, and encourage others to join, Archbishop Schnurr hosts an annual thank-you dinner. This year’s event on May 6 will be held at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza Hotel (downtown Cincinnati).

“We encourage everyone who cares deeply about our mission to join the BFS,” said Kyle Isaack, director of Advancement at the Athenaeum. “If you’ve already donated this year, please consider increasing your donation to $1,000 to become a BFS member. If you’ve never given, please consider making a donation today, so you can help form and educate our future priests. New BFS members will also be invited guests to the thank-you dinner in May.”

Invitations to the Bishop Fenwick Society Archbishop’s Thank You Dinner will be mailed March 29.
