School of Theology Hosts ‘Justification Today’ Ecumenical Dialogue
10.14.26

The School of Theology at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary & School of Theology hosted ‘Justification Today – An Evening of Ecumenical Dialogue’ on October 15 in the Bartlett Center at MTSM. The event was co-sponsored by Glenmary Home Missioners and United Theological Seminary.
The evening centered around the “Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification’ (JDDJ), which was written in 1999 and endorsed by the Catholic Church and Lutheran World Federation. The evening’s conversation focused around justification in the world today.
The featured speaker was Dr. Michael Root, Professor Emeritus in the School of Theology and Religious Studies at the Catholic University of America. Dr. Root was a member of the drafting team for the JDDJ, and provided some background on the development of the document and his perspective on its importance today.
Dr. Joel Chopp, Assistant Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky, provided a response with the Protestant perspective on the JDDJ. They then had a question and answer session which was moderated by Dr. Justus Hunter, Professor of Church History and Director of the Doctor of Theology Program at United Theological Seminary in Dayton. Nathan Smith, the Director of Ecumenism for Glenmary Home Missioners, served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
