Fr. Endres Receives Jerome Award from Catholic Library Association

Rev. David J. Endres, Ph.D., the Dean of The Athenaeum of Ohio and Mount St. Mary’s Seminary and Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary & School of Theology (MTSM), has received the 2024 Jerome Award from the Catholic Library Association (CLA). Fr. Endres will receive the award as part of the CLA’s Virtual Spring Conference on Friday, April 26.

“Receiving the Jerome Award was both a surprise and an honor,” Fr. Endres said. “To be numbered among some of the finest Catholic scholars of the last 30 years is truly humbling.”

Fr. Endres’ is an active and busy author, with his latest edited volume Slavery and the Catholic Church in the United States: Historical Studies being released in 2023. His writing background includes being the editor of the scholarly quarterly U.S. Catholic Historian and writing a monthly column for The Catholic Telegraph, the magazine for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

He is currently working on a biography about Archbishop William Henry Elder, the second Archbishop of Cincinnati.

“It is particularly gratifying to be recognized by the Catholic Library Association, as many librarians and archivists have been essential to my research and writing,” Fr. Endres noted.

Established in 1992, the Jerome Award recognizes outstanding contribution and commitment to excellence in scholarship which embody the ideals of the Catholic Library Association. The Award is named for St. Jerome, Doctor of the Church (331-420) and the patron of librarians.

“The award is a reminder of the enduring important of the Church’s intellectual tradition, and the role of educators and scholars in preserving and furthering that tradition,” Endres stated. “It underscores the enduring significance of integrating faith and reason – which is one of our goals at MTSM.”
